I don’t know why Apple decided that iPhone owners can’t just set any old MP3 as their ringtone of choice. Cynics might claim that it’s to protect a lucrative revenue stream – why give ’em something for free when you can charge ’em – but I don’t believe that’s true. It’s more likely to do with the quality-of-experience ethos that surrounds the design of Apple products, specifically preventing those within earshot of an iPhone from being exposed to the kind of ringtone that makes you want to kill the phone’s owner.
Thankfully it’s not impossible to roll your own. You can Google the subject and watch videos and tutorials on the matter, or you can just take your favourite audio loop, save it as AAC, and change the extension to M4R before importing it into iTunes.
